This website is designed to highlight and discuss my professional architectural career spanning over 40 years, and to demonstrate the evolution of residential design and construction trends over that time.

These projects are an accumulation of my work over this period as principle in John Chaplin Design ( 1976 – 1995 ), John Chaplin Architects ( 1995 – 2004 ) and Chaplin Crooks Architects ( 2004 – 2018 ).

It is also to acknowledge the many people who have worked for and with me over that time and as a means to show appreciation to my past staff, clients and contractors over these past four decades.

The site is also to outline the professional services I am still providing in my continuing consulting role…

JOHN CHAPLIN
I am a Registered Architect and Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, and a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Builders and Chartered Building Professional.
I retired from my practice of Chaplin Crooks Architects in November 2018, after over 40 years of practice, and am now providing a part time architectural consulting practice as noted above.
A more detailed bio is outlined in the project pages.

From 1972 to now

Graduation

I completed my NZCD (arch ) in 1972 as a Cadet with the then MOW, before leaving and setting up my practice of John Chaplin Design in 1976 and building our home on Mt Pleasant .
1982

Foundation member of the New Zealand Federation of Architectural Designers Inc. (NZFAD) - Branch Chairman 1992 – 94 and National President 1995 - 98.
1994

Completed NZIA / AERB Special Examination and registration as an Architect, joined NZIA as an Architect member and was elected to Branch Committee.
1995

Change in practice name to John Chaplin Architect following my registration as an architect.
2003

Formed new practice of Chaplin Crooks Architects with Stephen Crooks, elected NZIA Branch Chairman in 2004, appointed NZIA National council member and assessor for the Architects Registration Board in 2006.
2007

Appointed a design assessor for the LBP program and elected a Fellow member of the NZIA.
2008

Elected a member of the NZ Institute of Building and a Southern Chapter Board member.
2010

Appointed QA reviewer for the Weathertight Services Group.
2012 - 2018

2012 - NZIA Presidents Award for services to Canterbury Branch membership during earthquake recovery.
2018 - Elected Fellow member of NZ Institute of Building and appointed Chartered Building Professional.
2019

Retired as partner/director of Chaplin Crooks Architects and now working as a consultant.
Now

Work has traditionally been designing for residential hill projects, but in more recent years has incorporated a wider range of architectural consulting work.

A Glimpse from over the years

I have set out the history of the mostly residential projects of the past almost 45 years in the following sections, starting with my first important project, our new home on Santa Maria Ave, highlighting the original construction in 1976 - 77, and the metamorphosis of the home over the next 40 years, then finishing with our just completed home at Tata Beach, Golden Bay.

The following pages then show a selection of projects I have designed, divided into the past 4 decades and spanning from my original practice of John Chaplin Design to Chaplin Crooks Architects in the past decade.

The majority of photos are my own, but there are 3 or 4 which have been professionally taken.
